Her song Mean is about being bullied.
But revenge was sweet for Taylor Swift last night, as the 22-year-old singer won not one, but two Grammys at last night’s coveted awards.
The singer scooped both the Best Country Song and Best Country Performance prizes for the Platinum-selling track.
‘There’s really no feeling quite like writing a song about someone who’s completely mean to you and completely hates you, and then winning a Grammy for it,’ Taylor said as she collected her award.
Her album Speak Now, which includes the payback anthem, was also nominated for Best Country Album.
Taylor arrived at the awards wearing a stunning glittering cheongsam-inspired golden gown featuring a high neck cut and caplet sleeves.
The beautiful blonde star wore her hair swept up in a low-key yet chic updo and a glamorous application of make-up.
But for her performance of Mean, the singer went back to her country roots, slipping on a loose vintage floral dress with a petticoat peeking out from underneath and brown lace-up shoes.
Joined by a bluegrass band, Taylor strum an electric banjo guitar bearing her lucky number 13 on the front.
The instrument also had the words ‘Someday… I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me,’ scrawled across the front, lyrics from Mean.
The singer even tweaked the words of the song for her performance, singing ‘some day, i’ll be singing this at the grammys and all you’re ever gonna be is mean!’ in the chorus, which was met with cheers from the audience.
‘Mean’ is Taylor’s take on being bullied.
‘There’s constructive criticism, there’s professional criticism, and then there’s just being mean,’ Taylor has said of the song.
‘And there’s a line that you cross when you just start to attack everything about a person
‘This happens no matter what you do, no matter how old you are, no matter what your job is, no matter what your place is in life, there’s always gonna be someone who’s just mean to you.
‘And dealing with that is all that you can control, how you handle it. This song is about how I handle it.’
The track has a distinct bluegrass sound with banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and harmonies all featured throughout.
Taylor has never said she has been bullied herself, but she’s known not to shy away from writing songs about people she feels have betrayed her or people that have been in her life.
Her 2010 hit song Back To December was widely rumoured to be based on her relationship with Twilight star Taylor Lautner.
Lautner and Swift dated for a few months in 2009 before breaking up that December due to constant fighting and disagreements.
The tune appeared to an open apology to the actor.
‘I’ve never felt the need to apologize in a song before, but in the last two years I’ve experienced a lot, [including] a lot of different kinds of learning lessons,’ she told MTV last year.
‘And sometimes you learn a lesson too late and at that point you need to apologize because you were careless.
‘This is about a person who was incredible to me, just perfect to me in a relationship. And I was really careless with him.’
